Eye Care Procedures Menu
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
| This
procedure is known by several different names. Some in common use are
Presbyopic Lens Exchange (Prelex) and Clear Lens Exchange (CLE). In
short, it is exactly the same procedure as a cataract removal except it
is done for the sole purpose of decreasing dependence on glasses or
contact lenses, and, therefore, is not covered by traditional insurance
plans. The natural lens is removed (it is becoming less flexible and
harder with age) and it is usually replaced with a lens implant that
allows both near and far vision in the same eye. The two implants Dr
Tschoepe uses for this purpose are the ReStor and ReZoom. This
procedure eliminates the need for cataract surgery in the future. | |
RLE
is considered an "off-label" procedure; which is using a device approved
by the FDA for cataract surgery in a procedure other than cataract surgery. See cataract surgery for more details. |
